So, yeah, I decided to become a little more normal and ordered this fucker today:
The LaCie D2 Quadra 500GB eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 & USB 2.0 Hard Drive-External Hard Drives. Oh, yeah. I'll never run out of hard-disk space now.

You should have asked me first before you purchased it (I have this same one.) So far it is fine so no worries.

Ah! Yes, I should have thought to solicit more than one opinion, but I do trust Karl muchly with his advice in these matters.
I am planning on using it in some capacity for the band, if only as backup.
