The Subway Rambler (Online)

This isn't from some guy who just spends his time rambling around the tunnels of the MTA. The name is a shortened form of the blog's original title, "That Rambling Guy on the Subway, Online." Hope that clears things up for you.

The Cleaners

Putnam circled through town yesterday, as part of his Summer tour. We did a lot of work around the house. Nothing huge - just clean up, weeding, all that. But I felt so much better when it was done - and I've managed to carry some of it through today, finally tackling the giant jungle of crap that is my old office. It's still in the primordial, paper-strewn state, but at least I've made headway.

Ramblers like this are, I think, exhibit 'a' in the argument that I am not a normal person. Normal people don;t get completely cowed by their own mess. They either stay on top of it in the first place, or they just get in and deal with it without the giant cloud of anxiety that hovers close by, ready to burst at any moment. No shit - I can (and frequently do) become completely paralyzed with inaction by my mess.

Ever since Yesenia and I moved into the house (back in 2002), I've slowly been whittling in down, but enough is enough: mess no more!

Maybe that's my motto for 2012.

I did have a somewhat productive weekend - at least I was able to make decisions regarding the status of some of the stuff, which is a victory in and of itself.

Still - the piles remain.

Thankfully, I always clean like a fiend for the big parties, so the deadline of August 23rd will seriously help me get things in order.

for a while greg and i made a point of hosting people every couple of weeks (for dinner, for movies, for whatever) just because it would motivate us to clean. i grew up in a household where cleaning ONLY happened at holidays (and even then it consisted of throwing things in bags and stashing them in my parents' room) so 'hosting' and 'cleaning' go together in my brain. we haven't had anyone over in a while though (no a/c in the living room = grumpy guests) so at this point we pretty much only clean when the cat gets mad and pisses on something.

Yeah - I definitely got mixed signals growing up on the merits of cleaning. My father and mother are both INSANE packrats - particularly my dad, who had crap just everywhere. But he would get seriously bent out of shape about my own predilection for having crap everywhere.

I really hate being a disorganized slob, and I'm glad that I've been slowly, inexorably moving towards clean and organized - but it's a long slog, I tell you.
